Watchdog tells public, media to closely watch political parties’ budgets

The Indonesian Forum for Budget Transparency (FITRA) in West Nusa Tenggara has called on the public and the mass media to actively monitor the use of political parties’ budgets.
The forum said that the budgets of the political parties, which were partially funded with state funds, were prone to corruption due to lack of transparency and accountability.

“This is probably not a new issue, but FITRA will always encourage the public to pay attention to the budget issue,” West Nusa Tenggara FITRA secretary-general Ervyn Kaffah said in Mataram on Wednesday.

In August, Ervyn said that FITRA asked for information about the budget reports, programs and activities of nine political parties in West Nusa Tenggara during the 2011 and 2012 periods, but only two responded.
The nine political parties are the Democratic Party, the Golkar Party, the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS), The Crescent Star Party (PBB), the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP), the United Development Party (PPP), the National Mandate Party (PAN), the People's Conscience Party (Hanura) and the Great Indonesia Movement (Gerindra).

Ervyn said that only PBB and Hanura responded after FITRAH sent letters reminding them about their obligation to provide transparent information to the public under the law.

He added that political parties as public organizations should open all information about them to the public as regulated in Law No.14/2008 on transparency of public information and Law No.2/2011 on political parties. (hrl)
